Geology of Brno

The workers of the company Archaia Brno o. p. s. don’t forget a natural relation between geology and archaeology, and therefore an internal project „Development of landscape relief on the territory of the statutory city of Brno“ (stages I to III) is being realised for three years already. That’s why they also cooperate at many excavations with Mgr. Lenkou Lisou, PhD. and with another workers from the Department of Environmental Geology of the Institute of Geology at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague. Our cooperation is very useful for a detailed knowledge of the youngest geological subsoil of the Brno town.

První dva roky projektu přinesly na tomto poli zajímavé výsledky. První velkou akcí, kterou vlastně spolupráce s geology začala byly podzemní stavební práce při tvorbě sekundárních kolektorů v historickém jádru města. Jednalo se o dokumentaci geologických situací v rámci podzemních štol, o světlosti cca 3 x 3 m, „ražených“ důlním způsobem pod ulicemi Kobližná, Zámečnická, Náměstí Svobody či Zelný trh. Postupně následovala dokumentace geologických situací v rámci jednotlivých záchranných archeologických výzkumů v Brně: při výstavbě nového pavilonu nemocnice Merciful Brothers’ Hospital in the Polní St., at the construction of new houses in the Pekařské 72 and Hybešově 44Streets, within the scope of reconstruction works at the head office of the Supreme Administrative Court in the Moravském náměstí 6 (Moravian Square), within trial trenches in the area of the Leitnerova St., at the construction of a new staircase to the garden of the house Petrov 2, at the construction of flat houses in the Vinohrady St. on Červený kopec (Red Hill), or at the new area construction of the Faculty of Information Technology of the Brno University of Technology in the Božetěchova St. in Královo Pole (King’s Field).

Many of these works are still waiting for being published, some of them came already out in local geological and archaeological periodicals like “Geologické výzkumy na Moravě a ve Slezsku” (Geological Survey in Moravia and Silesia) or “Otázky neolitu a enelitu” (Problems of the Neolithic and Aeneolithic). The results of some excavations had been already presented in international geomorphological, geological or archaeological conferences. A geological assessment from every single excavation is being attached to the archaeological assessments and deposited as a manuscript within the framework of particular finding reports in the archive of the company Archaia Brno o.p.s..

The project has been realized so far without any finances from another sources.
